Waxing FAQ

Waxing FAQ

How long does my hair need to be?

The hair need to be at least 1/4 of an inch, that is about the length of a grain of rice. Typically it is 10-14 days without shaving or 4-6 weeks between waxes. There is no such thing as the hair being too long, do not trim the hair before coming in for the wax.

What type of wax do you use?

All of our waxing services are performed with our gentle and effective soy based wax. We use a strip style wax which if fast, efficient, and cleanly removes the hair from the follicle.

What do you use to treat the skin after a wax?

We finish every waxing service with a nut-free oil to remove any wax residue. For more sensitive areas, we apply Finipil, an antiseptic cream that helps protect the open follicles and calm down redness. We also retail Finipil for your continued use at home.

Will waxing make my hair grow back thicker?

No, it is a myth that hair grows back thicker and darker after removal. Because we remove the hair all the way from the follicle, the hair grows back thinner, finer, and more sporadic. Waxing actually helps to thin out hair growth in the long run.

Will waxing hurt?

While waxing is not painless, our unique approach to hair removal helps the process be as comfortable as possible. Everyone has a different pain tolerance and different areas of the body are more uncomfortable than others. There is no such thing as “painless waxing”, if it is truly painless it means the hair is being broken at the surface rather than being completely removed from the follicle. The more regular you are with waxing, the more comfortable the service is.

How long does waxing last?

You will see little to no regrowth for the first 1-2 weeks. As your hair starts growing, it will come back thinner and more sporadic. Unlike shaving all the hair does not come back at once. It takes 4-6 weeks before you will have enough regrowth to wax again. The more regular you are with waxing, the longer you can go between appointments.

This is my first time, what do I need to know to prepare.

The biggest mistake we see new clients make is not having long enough hair. We need at least 10 days of growth post shaving. The longer the better, we promise your hair is not too long. Do not trim prior to your service, most people will trim too short and the hair will not be long enough to get a clean wax.

If you are worried about pain, feel free to take Ibuprofen or Tylenol 30 minutes prior to your service.

Make sure the area is clean, dry, and exfoliated before your service.

No sun tanning 48 hours before waxing.

Is there any reason I wouldn’t be able to get waxed?

Besides the hair being too short, certain medications would contraindicate a waxing service. Prescription acne medication such as Accutane or Tretinoin will deeply exfoliate your skin leaving it unsafe to wax. Other topicals such as Benzoyl Peroxide or retinol will leave your skin too weak to wax. Discontinue any topical treatments at least 72 hours prior to your appointment. You must be off Accutane for at least 6 month before you can wax. Other medication or products may make your skin sensitive to waxing. Make sure to tell your esthetician if you started any new products or medications.

You may receive a wax while you are menstruating, we provide sanitary products in our restroom.

Waxing during pregnancy is safe, though it may be more sensitive. Our highly trained staff will take great care of you to make sure you are comfortable.

Yay I did it! Now what?

Your skin will be a little red or irritated for 24 hours after a wax. Make sure to keep that skin clean, as we are removing the hair all the way from the follicle, it will leave that follicle open. It will take 24 hours for the follicle to close. No swimming, no tanning, no hot tubs or saunas, no working out for 24 hours. Anything that could introduce friction or bacterial into the follicle should be avoided for the first 24 hours after a wax. A few days post wax you will want to start exfoliating to prevent ingrown hairs. You can use a body scrub or cloth or purchase a daily chemical exfoliant such as PFB Vanish from our retail area. Your esthetician will send you off with all the education you will need.

Why are there different prices for brazilian (vulva) and brazilian (penis)?

We only have 1 esthetician (Megan) who is trained to wax the scrotum and penis. Because this is a specialized service it takes more time. We at The Refinery strive to be as inclusive as possible. If you are a trans or non-binary person and would like to discuss pricing or terminology please email Megan at refinerysalondirector@gmail.com
